Route St Helens (Tasmania), across Bass Strait to Bermagui, north to Yamba

In 2021, after a year of lockdown and the end of my Cape to Cape project, we decided to travel within Australia as a family aboard our new boat, Euphoria. We quickly fitted her out with heating, better communications and a round of preventative maintenance, and left Tasmania at the start of winter, heading for warmer latitudes.

After a few minor issues and a wait for powerful south-westerlies to ease, we crossed Bass Strait safely from St Helens to Bermagui. We wrangled some starter motor issues and kept heading north just as the Delta variant took hold. With lockdowns looming, we pushed hard to cross into Queensland before the border shut.

We didn't make it. We reached Yamba, in the Northern Rivers, and when the country locked down we were stuck there for six months. With the Great Barrier Reef out of reach and a new family member on the way, we sold Euphoria and moved back to Tasmania to pursue a different kind of life, until the sea calls again.
