From 2006 to 2010 I sailed from Europe to Australia via the Atlantic and Pacific in Constellation, a 26ft Contessa. In 2019 I set out to close the loop overland: from the southernmost road in Australia, at South East Cape in Tasmania, to North Cape in Norway, the northernmost point you can reach by car.
The plan was to drive around the top of Australia, ship the Land Rover to South Africa in a container, then drive up through Africa into Europe. Along the way I would cross the track of my sailing voyage and finish where Constellation's journey began.
I completed Stage 1, Tasmania to Perth over the Top End, and shipped the Land Rover to South Africa, where I did more work on her before heading for Mozambique. By the time I reached Jeffreys Bay in March 2020, the pandemic had made it too risky to go on. I returned to Cape Town, stored the Land Rover and flew home.
As the pandemic dragged on, it became clear the trip was over. I had the Land Rover shipped home, and she landed in Melbourne in January 2021. Within months, we had turned back to the sea (see Australian East Coast).
