Lord Howe is a small miracle 600 kilometres off the east coast of Australia. Seventy per cent of it is untouched, and it is full of, and surrounded by, species found nowhere else. It's temperate by tropical standards, but one look underwater would have you believe otherwise.
Alex and I had only 12 hours to prepare if we were going to make our weather window. We hurried out over the Ballina bar and set a direct course for the island. As forecast, we were soon pushed further north, so we stopped at Elizabeth Reef, 100 nautical miles north of Lord Howe, and anchored in the middle of the ocean for the night.
Our arrival made the island look more sub-Antarctic than tropical. A dark squall blew through as we dropped the mainsail. By afternoon the sun was out, and we were exploring the island's only road.
