Europe to Australia
The long way home: four years, singlehanded, in a 26ft boat.
| Years | 2006 to 2010 |
|---|---|
| Boat | Constellation, a 26ft Contessa |
| Crew | Singlehanded |
| Route | West coast of Europe, Canary Islands, Caribbean, New York, San Francisco, Hawaii, Palmyra Atoll, Samoa, Tonga, Coffs Harbour |
My route home to Australia was an unconventional one. I sailed down the west coast of Europe to the Canary Islands, then nonstop across the Atlantic to the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, and nonstop again to New York City.
In New York I refitted the boat and trucked her across the country to San Francisco. From there I sailed to Hawaii, Palmyra Atoll, Western Samoa and Tonga, then nonstop to Coffs Harbour, Australia.
The voyage became the feature-length documentary Between Home, by Berlin-based filmmaker Jack Rath, and a book, The Years Thunder By, published in 2020.
